Just like any new hobby, getting started with machine embroidery can be challenging. Though there will inevitably be a learning curve and a few hiccups along the way, embroidery is not only a fun creative outlet, it’s a rewarding one. The final product is sure to bring smiles to the faces of your friends, family, and customers!
Luckily, Embroider Buddy® pieces are designed with all embroiderers in mind – both seasoned and novice. From Buddies to Whatzupwiththat!® Bearwear, each item is made to suit the embroidery of your dreams – no matter how big or small!
Here are our top 5 tips for new creators just starting on their journey to embroidering beautiful designs:
1. Get to know your materials
Start by getting to know the basic tools you’ll need to create fabulous machine-embroidered designs:
- Hoop(s)
- A stabilizer
- Temporary adhesive spray
- Embroidery and bobbin threads
- Small scissors
We also recommend keeping an embroidery “journal” or “diary.” Use it to make notes about new projects you’ve tried, what worked, what didn’t, and what you might tweak to get an even better result the next time around! Things like thread type, fabric and machine adjustments are all important notes to take as you work your way through projects.

2. Make time to practice and test
We can’t stress this enough… practice, practice, practice! Getting comfortable with machine embroidery can take lots of time, but just know that it’s normal.
Test stitches are a great way to try designs before you fully commit. Make sure to use a similar piece of fabric when testing to get the best results on your final product.
3. Start simple
Most of us begin a journey into machine embroidery because we want to create fun and intricate designs that will wow and impress.
Starting simple will allow you to build confidence when working with different fabrics, thread types and designs. Here are some of our favourite simple designs to try first:

4. Be fearless
Now that you’ve nailed some simple designs and gotten comfortable with your machine and other embroidery tools, it’s time to start taking risks! Don’t shy away from any project that looks too difficult.
Buddies are the perfect template for practicing more detailed embroidery. They’re built to make stitching and hooping a breeze! Simply unzip your furry friend and remove the stuffing pod inside for easy embroidery access.
Intricate embroidery on a Buddy’s belly is one of our favourite ways to personalize. Add names, important dates, inside jokes or beloved quotes to make each and every Embroider Buddy® design unique!
5. Have fun!
Keep in mind that embroidery is all about having fun and sharing your creative side. With lots of pieces and projects to choose from and inspiration along the way, you’ll never get bored when designing with Embroider Buddy®!

Very good tips. My main tip – don’t rush, always try out a new design / font before embroidering your buddy. Make sure the design and fonts are clear and large enough to be seen.
Thank you, Janet! What a great tip!
